What is a Community Fridge?
We reduce local food waste by collecting short-dated, surplus food, from supermarkets and local food businesses and redistributing to our community.
The Community Fridge is for absolutely anyone - our main aim is to save as much food from going to waste as we possibly can! Just turn up each day and see what we have on offer. It can vary greatly from day to day, there might not be very much one day and the next day there might be literally tonnes, it all depends what the supermarkets and local businesses have available for saving!
We operate a ‘Pay As You Feel’ system. For those who can and wish to donate, they can do so by cash or card - but if you have little money just now, there is no obligation to donate at all. For regular updates about what we have in stock and to help us stop all this food going to waste, follow the dedicated Facebook group - Dundee West End Community Fridge.

Why do we do this?
Food waste accounts for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, so we knew we had to do our bit locally to save as much food from going to waste as we could.
Since opening in July 2019 we have redistributed over 250 tonnes (that's 1/4 million kg!) of perfectly good food that would have otherwise gone in the bin. As well as saving food waste, a Community Fridge helps people connect to their community, access nutritious food, save money, learn about cooking and food safety, and learn about the impact of food waste on climate change. It also provides dignified access to food for those who really need it, because it is open to everyone. We are part of the UK-wide Community Fridge Network run by Hubbub.
